Alan Kropp, G.E., President

Principal Engineer


Mr. Kropp has over 47 years of local geotechnical experience and is recognized for his expertise in the identification, characterization, and mitigation of landslide hazards. Mr. Kropp has served on the board of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institutes Northern California chapter (EERI-NC) and has been recognized for his contributions in earthquake hazard research. His project experience includes performing geotechnical investigations for schools, roads, subdivisions, hillside properties, office and commercial buildings, and bridges. Mr. Kropp regularly provides geotechnical peer review services to City and County governments and is knowledgeable about geotechnical conditions, principles, and practices throughout much of California.

James Lott, G.E.

Associate Engineer


Mr. Lott has 39 years of practical experience in providing geotechnical engineering services on projects throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Mr. Lott’s geotechnical experience includes investigations and services during construction for research, commercial and industrial facilities, seismic rehabilitations, transportation and bridge structures, multi-family residential structures, single-family homes, landslide repairs, and hillside grading. Mr. Lott’s extensive experience also includes public agency peer review services, expert witness consultations and forensic evaluations.

Jeroen van den Berg, C.E.

Senior Engineer


Mr. van den Berg has 18 years of experience in providing geotechnical engineering services on a variety of projects throughout Northern California. As a practicing geotechnical engineer, Mr. van den Berg has planned and managed a variety of projects including investigation and repair of landslides, pavement studies and highway realignments, capital improvement projects for municipalities, seismic retrofits, single- and multi-family residential projects, and commercial developments. Mr. van den Berg’s experience also includes public agency peer review services and forensic evaluations.

Frederick Maurer, C.E., G.E.

Senior Engineer


Mr. Maurer has over 45 years of geotechnical experience throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and more recently (2012–2018) in Christchurch, New Zealand. He specializes in the evaluation of geohazards such as seismic shaking, landsliding, faulting, liquefaction, and lateral spreading. He joined Alan Kropp and Associates in 2023 to mainly assist with Alan Kropp and Associates’ work in the identification, characterization, and mitigation of landslide hazards (as well as other geohazards). Mr. Maurer has been a registered Civil Engineer since 1981 and a registered Geotechnical Engineer since 1987. He also served as a Chartered Professional Engineer in New Zealand. His geotechnical project experience also includes performing geotechnical investigations for schools, roads, subdivisions, hillside properties, office and commercial buildings, and warehouse structures.

Thomas Brencic, C.E.

Staff Engineer & Lab Manager


Mr. Brencic has 24 years of experience in providing geotechnical engineering services on projects throughout the San Franciso Bay Area. Mr. Brencic’s geotechnical experience includes investigations and services during construction for single- and multi-family residential projects, mixed-use retail/residential building projects, student housing projects, public school projects and landslide repairs. Mr. Brencic also provides geotechnical services for monitoring of open spaces and geotechnical instrumentation for geologic hazard abatement districts and homeowners associations. Mr. Brencic manages our geotechnical laboratory and is the Radiation Safety Officer for the nuclear density gauges, running the day-to-day operations.
