Gurdwara Sahib – Fremont, CA

Gurdwara Sahib

Geotechnical Investigation
Construction Observation and Testing Services

AKA conducted a geotechnical investigation for the proposed expansion of the Gurdwara Sahib in Fremont. The proposed expansion project will be constructed in multiple phases and will involve extensive building remodeling and a two-story addition to Langar Hall, construction of a two-story rotunda, a bridge structure between Langar Hall and Diwan Hall, a two-story addition to the east side of Diwan Hall, and an approximately 16-foot-high free standing privacy/sound wall adjacent to the northwest side of Diwan Hall. AKA’s geotechnical investigation included drilling borings, conducting laboratory tests, and providing recommendations for the mitigation of expansive soils at the site and design of the proposed improvements. AKA has provided comprehensive geotechnical observation and testing services for the first phase of expansion which involved the construction of the addition to Langar Hall, construction of a canopy between the addition to Langar Hall and Diwan Hall, construction of a trash enclosure, and associated flatwork and pavement construction/replacement.

Rolling Hills Memorial Park – Richmond, CA

Rolling Hills Memorial Park

Geotechnical Evaluation and Exploration
Construction Observation and Testing Services

AKA performed a geotechnical evaluation of nine proposed improvement locations within the Rolling Hills Memorial Park in Richmond. Rolling Hills Memorial Park is a cemetery, mausoleum, and columbarium serving the city of Richmond and surrounding communities since 1960. The proposed improvements consist of a new burial area, new site walls, monuments, gazebos, a new maintenance yard, and a new funeral home with associated parking and new road access. AKA’s geotechnical evaluation involved excavating test pits at the proposed improvement areas to evaluate the general quality of the materials present in each of the areas and providing preliminary evaluations regarding construction of the proposed improvements in each location. Following our geotechnical evaluation, AKA performed additional geotechnical exploration, provided geotechnical design recommendations, and provided comprehensive geotechnical observation and testing services during the construction of a new roadway and expansion of a burial area along the southern boundary of Memorial Park.

St. Mark’s Church Housing – Berkeley, CA

St. Mark’s Church

Geotechnical Investigation
Construction Observation and Testing Services

AKA performed a geotechnical investigation and provided geotechnical engineering services during construction of the St. Mark’s Church Housing project in Downtown Berkeley. The project involved demolition of the existing parking garage, parish building, and classroom facility at the site and their replacement with a new parking garage, parish hall and four stories of residential units. Our investigation included a detailed review of local geotechnical and historic information and utilized selective test borings to supplement the available existing data. AKA also provided comprehensive geotechnical observation and testing services and provided consultation to resolve onsite geotechnical issues.

Aquatic Park Touchdown Plaza – Berkeley, CA

Aquatic Park

Geotechnical Investigation and Consultation during Preliminary Design

AKA provided geotechnical engineering services to the Berkeley-based planning firm Design Community & Environment in support of the Aquatic Park Touchdown Plaza project. The plaza is situated at what was once the San Francisco Bay margin, prior to the development of the I-880 corridor that created Aquatic Park Lake. AKA’s review of site-specific historic information, nearby geotechnical test borings and published geologic materials showed that soft soils and earthquake-induced soil liquefaction were likely concerns. AKA consulted with the designers on the site’s likely seismic performance prior to developing our investigative scope, which was directed at developing a reasonable and cost-effective approach to the plaza design. Following our onsite investigations, we worked collaboratively with the project designers to develop concepts that achieved project objectives, while providing a satisfactory level of long-term performance.

Duck Pond Park – Hercules, CA

Duck Pond Park

Geotechnical Investigation and Consultation during Design

AKA performed the geotechnical investigation for Duck Pond Park in Hercules, California, and provided geotechnical consultation during the design phase of the project. Project plans included constructing a new community center, parking lot, walking paths, game courts, gazebo, and lawn areas in an undeveloped area which is underlain by artificial fill and 35 feet of highly compressible Bay Mud deposits. Settlement caused by raising site grades and adding building loads were primary concerns for the geotechnical design of the project. AKA calculated that up to 1-foot of settlement could occur due to the new loads. AKA worked with the designers to develop a reasonable and cost-effective approach for constructing the building foundation and park improvements. Recommendations for site preparation, fill placement, settlement monitoring, surface drainage, building foundations, and pavements were included in the final report.
